Every day there is a celebration of some sort of food. Some foods get several days throughout the year, and maybe with good cause, but there was one today that certainly got my attention. Today is Curried Chicken Day.
I do have to say, it took me a while to discover curries, but now that I have, they have certainly become some of my favourites. And there are many to choose from. First, there are several colours of curry like red, green and yellow. Some depend on the region they come from and some on the flavours people want to use in the dish. So saying “chicken curry” is really pretty wide ranging.
Curry is also something that has become a worldwide thing. It is considered a national dish in the U.K. Although again, saying curry is a national dish is along the lines of saying you’ll eat just about anything.
Some might say they don’t like things hot and spicy, which curry doesn’t need to be. particularly if you stay away from a prepared curry powder and just use the base spices to make your own. Then you can just not put in as much hot stuff.
Over the past few years I have even managed to introduce my mother to curries. She was never much for spicy food, so didn’t really experiment too much with curry. I think it was butter chicken that won her over. It’s not overly spicy and the sauce is rather tasty, and, although she’s not a big rice eater, she does love rice with some sort of sauce on it. So this stuff has become a bit of a favourite with her.
Until I checked my usual list of food holidays I had no idea what I was going to have for dinner. Now I know. A little curried chicken sounds like a great idea.
