I like to tell people I plan to avoid the 21st century as long as possible. At least I try.
This came up one day when someone mentioned doing an email money transfer. I replied that I don’t do that, which gets you some funny looks these days.
It’s not that I don’t like technology. I just don’t want it in all parts of my life. It’s become an ongoing discussion with many companies I do business with. Like my insurance company. They keep telling me to download all my policy details. No. I might go look at it, but I pay them far too much money for them to download the cost of printing and mailing onto me. And those little pink insurance cards for the car? No, I will not put it on my phone. I don’t have a data plan. Send me the little slip of paper, thank you.
I also don’t do online shopping. Well, I can’t say never. There was once when I needed parts for something that I couldn’t get in the province, so I ordered them. But that was it. If I can’t go somewhere and find what I want, I just figure I probably don’t really need it.
I like being able to see and touch things. I know this means I’m no longer with the times, but that’s okay with me. I don’t have to be concerned with porch pirates and I just laugh at those scam phone calls telling me my Amazon package is held up at the border. Just leave them there, I’ll pick them up later.
Today just happens to be free shipping day, which I thought was sort of interesting. Until I looked it up and discovered it was something started by online retailers because they noticed sales would start to drop after December 10 each year when people thought it was too late to get something shipped before Christmas. So it was just a scheme to get you to order more stuff.
Maybe I’m falling behind in the world, but that’s okay. I’ll find a way to make do.
