A church in Shelburne is looking for volunteers to help out with a it’s ‘Illuminate’ event.
Joanne Ozon, Pastor of Hope Wesleyan Church said the event is essentially a prom night for the special needs community.
“During COVID-19 it seems like they have been the once that have been forgotten about,” explained Ozon. “We just want to make a night for them where they dress their best, walk the red carpet, celebrate them with limo rides, paparazzi and ever single one gets crowned king and queen.”
Ozon explained that she got the idea for ‘Illuminate’ after taking her special needs brother to a similar to this event in New Brunswick.
She said the event is the first of its kind to be held in Nova Scotia.
According to Ozon they are still in need of about forty volunteers to help make the night happen.
“The volunteers could do a range of anything,” explained Ozon. “They could be buddied up with a special guest, or we have volunteers we need in the background like photographers, videographers and people to set up and decorate.”
She added that all COVID-19 protocols will be followed and all volunteers must be fully vaccinated.
The ‘Illuminate’ event will take place at the Shelburne Fire Hall on February 11th and those interested in volunteering can send an email to Illuminate_NovaScotia@outlook.com or message the Illuminate Nova Scotia Facebook page.
