I learned a couple things this morning. The first thing was that thunder can be really loud. The second is that cats can levitate.
Cats being able to levitate may not come as a total surprise to some cat owners. You really only need two things. A sleeping cat and a loud noise. The levitating part just sort of happens.
As I mentioned, thunder is loud. At least when it is happening close by. It seemed to be the cause of the levitating cat, but I may need some more research into this.
This morning, very early, we had a nasty little thunderstorm roll through. At the time, the cat was asleep on the window sill in the bedroom. The cat really seems to enjoy sleeping on the window sill in front of the open window. In her cat like way, she can sleep and still keep an eye on her enemies in the back yard, tracking their plots and movements. But this morning, her surveillance was rudely interrupted by a very sudden and very loud clap of thunder.
That is when the levitation took place.
I am not sure the cat actually bothered to wake up, but I swear she rose about two feet in the air. Straight up. Loud thunder clap, cat rises. The cat then hit the ground running and disappeared. She did not reappear until the storm had passed, at which point she returned to remind me that her dish was getting a bit low and need topping up.
I am not absolutely positive it was the loud noise that caused this, because at the same time, the sky opened and a downpour started. The window was open, so it is possible there was rain that fell on the cat. As with most cats, she is rather water shy. She doesn’t really like the stuff, so getting hit with it could also cause the reaction. I may have to try further experimentation. Like finding the cat asleep and turning the hose on her. That could help narrow it down.
But the real surprise was the dog. My dog hates fireworks. Thunder, she doesn’t care about. When the thunder roared this morning and the cat was rising up into the air, the dog had no reaction. She just rolled over and went back to sleep.
Now if anyone within a twenty mile radius even thinks of setting off a firework, the dog goes crazy. She runs around panting and hoping to be comforted and protected. You may not be able to hear said firework, but she can, and they are after her. Thunder that sounds like its right above her head has no effect, but a distant firework, the world is coming to an end.
I have no idea how she can tell the difference, but she can. And that made me very happy.
Instead of a shaking, terrified dog, she just rolled over and went back to sleep. So did I. Once I was finished laughing at the cat.
