As Jon Bon Jovi once said, “We’re half way there”. Actually, a little better than halfway. With any luck, I’ll make it to the end.
I’m doing the No Mow May thing. Mostly because I just don’t feel like mowing, but also to help the insects and the environment. Yeah. That’s it. Help the environment. I’m not lazy. I’m environmentally aware.
But I thought the idea was that dandelions and other little things were supposed to grow. Strangely, I don’t have many dandelions. Usually I have hundreds on my lawn, but this year, there are hardly any. Maybe they decided to move elsewhere because I’m acting like I don’t care. When I’m out there mowing them down, they seem to pop up everywhere. Now that I decided to not mow, they aren’t bothering. Fine by me. And probably my neighbours.
But on top of trying to help the environment, the No Mow May has given me a chance to actually see my lawn. I mean really see it. It’s green. Mostly. But there really isn’t a lot of grass there. There are various green things, but most of them don’t grow all that tall. There is grass. Well, to be a bit more exact, there are clumps of grass. It is not a uniform type of thing. That is the one thing that is really standing out. Parts of the lawn grow. Parts of it just turn green and sit there.
When you mow the whole thing to a uniform height, this doesn’t jump out at you. The lawn is just sort of one level of green. But letting it grow out a bit has highlighted the fact that my lawn is… well… almost fake.
When I started the No Mow May thing, I had visions of having to rent a hay rake when June rolled around. That will not be needed. There really isn’t that much grass. I suspect that a good portion of what I call my lawn could go through much of the summer without needing to be mowed.
But it will get mowed. Just to get rid of that clumpy look.
I don’t know how much this may have helped the insects or the environment. But it has helped me recognize my lawn needs work. A lot of work.
I’ll put that on my list.
