I miss the old stores that are no longer here. Sure, the new stores seem to have greater buying power and lower prices when adjusted for inflation, but the old department store chains each had something special about them.
Obviously the Canadian fall tradition of the Sears Wish Book was the main reason to shop at Sears. (But a trip to Halifax to the Sears Bargain basement was also pretty cool)
Zellers had the Red Skillet restaurant where you could check your Club Zed points and figure out if there was enough to buy a Zeddy.
Entering Woolco or Kmart was always a mouth-watering occasion because they both would pop caramel corn near the entrances. As a kid I thought all shopping involved eating caramel corn as you wandered through the aisles.
Eaton’s had the best Christmas displays in their windows and the merchandise they sold was always top value.
Which department store do you miss the most and why?
