I never realized how normal my family was until recently.
We had no Christmas Eve traditions that were unique. Unless you count the fact that we didn’t get to open one present on Christmas Eve like , it seems, every other family.
It was always a strict rule – no presents until Christmas Day morning.
No special meal. No church service. No special tradition.
I think the reason for it was that my father was in the Navy and if he was junior officer on a ship he would pull Christmas Eve or Christmas Day duty for a few hours. So we always worked around his schedule.
I have a coworker who talks about his family’s KFC traditional Christmas Eve dinner. Yes, Kentucky Fried Chicken! Since hearing his story I’ve heard of countless others who have a Christmas Eve tradition of KFC or take-out Chinese or even McDonald’s!
I once dated a girl whose family had the one present to open Christmas Eve rule but it was “fixed”. Somehow the one present everyone got to open was PJ’s. What’s up with that?
