YouTube released figures the other day to show we spent a lot of time watching videos online over the past year. No surprise there. Only so much on Netflix you can watch, then what?
Now, yes, we watched a lot of music videos. But there were also a lot of how to videos.
Want to know how top make sour dough? Go to YouTube. Want to know how to make banana bread? Go to YouTube. Want to know how to make a squirrel proof bird feeder? There is no such thing.
There are many on the market that claim to be squirrel proof. But no one bothered to ask the squirrels. Squirrels laugh at squirrel proof bird feeders. It is nothing more than a temporary challenge.
That’s where former NASA engineer Mark Rober comes in. Mark is the man who invented the glitter bomb package to defeat porch pirates. He has also done many other videos explaining things to us. Mark is a pretty smart guy. And he got tired of squirrels stealing all his bird seed. So he tried a few so called squirrel proof bird feeders. He discovered what many of the rest of us have discovered. They don’t work.
So he set out to build an obstacle course that would at least be a test for the squirrel.
The result is a video that is worth watching even with all the embedded ads. Of course, the squirrels succeed. I don’t think there really is a way to stop them. Like raccoons. When a raccoon is set on getting your bird feeder, it will get your bird feeder. It may fail a few times in the process and provide some entertainment along the way, but it will eventually find a way. At least, it seems that way.
Mark ended up with one of the top viewed videos last year. It is worth a watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFZFjoX2cGg&ab_channel=MarkRober
But it doesn’t keep the squirrels out of my bird feeder.
