A six story residential development planned for Bridgewater’s downtown has been approved by the town.
Town council approved plans to turn the former BMO building on the corner of King Street and Phoenix Street into a six story, 19-unit residential and commercial space during Monday’s council meeting.
Being developed by Black Seal Properties, the project will see four additional stories built on top of the already existing building.
The current ground floor will be reserved for commercial use while the existing second story will be transformed into residential units.
Jody Comeau, developer and co-owner of Black Seal Properties said the approval is a positive move for downtown Bridgewater.
“We are excited to get ready and are excited to bring King Street back to life,” he said.
“We have a few of the properties we own on that street, but this one is for sure our biggest one to date for us and will bring a real change.”
While no members of the public registered for the hearing on Monday, Councillor Michael Graves questioned how the development will facilitate parking for the 19 units.
Mackenzie Childs, town planner, said a plan to source parking is in the works.
“The development agreement stipulates that there needs to be some parking, but it doesn’t say how many spaces,” she said.
“So I believe the developer is working with the town to find some parking off site.”
Comeau confirmed parking would be sorted out at a separate date and would not be on site.
On the development, he said they don’t have a set date when construction will start, but they are eager to begin.
