Over 200 years of history is being celebrated by New Ross and the Municipality of Chester.
A commemorative barrel has been unveiled in Chester to mark the founding of New Ross on August 7, 1816.
It was two hundred and three years ago, that Captain William Ross and his family settled lands in what was then called Sherbrooke along with 172 disbanded soldiers from the Nova Scotia Fencibles.
Warden Allen Webber says he has a personal connection to both New Ross and Chester.
“It’s just important that we be reminded that we’re connected in more ways than which were not the same. We share the same history and it’s important that people remind us of that on occasion.”
Webber thanked Ross Farm Executive Director Peter Cullen for the museum’s work to remind residents of that shared heritage.
Cullen says relationships are fundamental to the growth and development and what become the history of a region.
“I can’t stress enough how much we need to work together to keep these relationships strong and alive. So genuinely, thank you to the municipality for allowing this to happen.”
MLA Hugh Mack was also present to represent the province in that spirit of cooperation.
