An annual tradition tied to the Big Ex continues to be present in Bridgewater.
Each year, members of 14 Wing Construction Engineering squadron out of Greenwood tie yellow ribbons to poles and trees downtown.
Organized by Honorary Colonel Dan Hennessey, the event recognizes the service of armed forces personnel.
Mayor David Mitchell says the gesture is a good reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve.
“We do it last year and this year at the beginning of exhibition week. The yellow ribbon symbolizes supporting our men and women in uniform, remembering our men and women in uniform.”
Mitchell says the timing of the gesture is key.
“There’s a lot of people in the community, a lot of people visiting, especially in the summer, driving through the community. So it’s a great time to bring that awareness and remembrance when there are more people around.”
Mitchell says by now, most people understand the significance of the yellow ribbon.
People will see them placed across Veteran’s Memorial Bridge and along King Street.
