New secure driver’s licences and photo ID cards are now available in Nova Scotia.
The rollout began in December and continued last month.
About 1000 are now in circulation.
Kevin Mitchell, the Director and Registrar of Road Safety with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, says they’re designed to prevent identity theft.
“There’s features with raised print, laser engraving, that just makes them more secure than what the previous cards are.”
Mitchell says there is no fee increase for the new driver’s licence and photo ID card.
In December 2016, the four Atlantic provinces awarded Gemalto, a world leader in digital security, a five-year contract to produce and mail the driver’s licences and photo ID cards.
