Cold and flu season maybe wrapping up for humans, but mans best friend is another story.
South Shore Veterinary Services sent out a note this week warning about an outbreak of kennel cough.
Veterinarian Dr. Melanie Colwell says the symptoms are quite similar to a human cold:
-A bad cough (can last for weeks)
-Runny eyes
-Runny nose
Colwell says while the bug is quite contagious it isn’t usually life-threatening.
“This is acting just like a child in a human daycare, where the cough just spreads like wild fire.”
The veterinarian says the virus can spread to cats, and even humans, once it’s in the home.
Colwell says there are a few vaccines available to help protect your four-legged friends.
But she says even with the vaccine, your dog could be at risk, so take precautions.
