Smoky conditions at Greenfield Elementary School led to an evacuation this morning
Multiple fire departments responded to the situation at around 10:30 am.
Moyal Conrad, Chief of Greenfield Fire Department says firefighters cleared smoke from the school and called an electrician to assess the school.
“We got the page out for smoke in the furnace room, when we arrived here there was some smoke coming out of the vents from the furnace and there was a strong smell of smoke throughout the school.”
A school board spokesperson says the cause was a faulty air handling unit.
Conrad says they called in mutual aid from North Queens and Liverpool just to be on the safe side, given many firefighters were at work and he worried about being shorthanded.
Students were taken to a nearby recreation centre and their parents were called to pick them up.
The school was closed for the remainder of the day but will reopen in the morning.
