So this is kinda interesting, especially in the ongoing conversation about data privacy and where our information actually goes online. There’s a Canadian-owned social media platform called EH! that officially launched its full desktop web version today, February 26th. Up until now, it’s only been available as a mobile app, but now you can actually use it in a browser like a more traditional social network. The whole idea behind this thing is pretty uniquely Canadian.
It’s built around the concept of keeping Canadian user data, and Canadian advertising dollars, inside the country, instead of everything automatically flowing south to major U.S.-based platforms. The pitch is that local communities, small businesses, creators, and even event organizers can connect through a platform that’s designed specifically around Canadian cities and communities, from major metro areas all the way down to smaller towns.
If you remember, Canada has tried homegrown social networks before, like Nexopia back in the early 2000s, but this is one of the first modern attempts to create something that’s trying to compete in today’s social media ecosystem, with things like groups, events, and locally-focused discussions baked right in from the start.
So it raises a pretty interesting thought: in an age where so much of our online life is tied to international tech giants… would you actually consider using a Canadian-made alternative if it meant more local control over your data and content?
