Some reports have said a shipment of lobster was seized at Halifax’s Stanfield International Airport and a raid was conducted at a lobster pound in Clare.
DFO communications advisor Stephen Bornais would not provide any details other than to say an investigation is underway into the sale of fish not harvested under commercial licenses.
He says as part of the investigation a facility and individuals were targeted by DFO conservation and protection officers on October 16 and a seizure of lobsters was made.
“The matter is an ongoing investigation, no further comment will be offered at this time. We do want to stress though that DFO will continue to work with all participants engaged in the Nova Scotia lobster fishery to ensure an orderly, safe, and sustainable environment for all harvesters.”
Bornais would not say if the seizures were connected to the Indigenous food, social and ceremonial fishery.
Some individual commercial fishermen and associations have said some Indigenous fishermen are taking unfair advantage of their right to continue fishing outside of the regular commercial season.
