The battle to save West Mabou Beach isn’t over yet according to a local graphic novelist.
Kate Beaton’s comments come after a rally brought dozens of community members to Mabou on the weekend.
The protected provincial park was in danger of having a golf course developed on it, until the province declined it.
Beaton tells us that even though the proposal was turned down, they are going to keep fighting.
“The Premier made it very clear, and his words were very selective that this isn’t like absolutely not never. This is no for now, which means that tomorrow there could be another proposal, and we’d have to deal with this again, and we don’t want to,” expressed Beaton.
She shared how similar proposals were declined in 2018 and 2023 and loopholes need to be closed before it happens again.
“The responsibility of opposing this primarily on the shoulders of the few people and wanted to help. But we don’t want to do it all the time,” according to Beaton.
She says the rally was a chance bring supporters together face to face to make the point that they don’t want this to happen again.
Beaton added, “We wanted to make the point that until legislation loopholes are closed, this could happen to West Mabou Beach Provincial Park again, it could happen to any protected space in Nova Scotia.”
She articulated it always comes down hardest on the communities because they’re just regular people who have to fight the government, corporations and public relations.
