Liverpool’s Sarah Mitton is heading into the World Athletics Championships with momentum on her side after capturing gold this weekend in China.
Mitton threw 19.81 metres to win the shot put at the World Athletics Continental Tour Final in Beijing.
The victory came over a strong international field, with Sweden’s Fanny Roos finishing second and China’s Zhang Linru placing third.
The result is another highlight in what has already been a standout season for the 29-year-old Liverpool, N.S., native, who has consistently ranked among the world’s best in her event.
She currently sits third in the global rankings and has established herself as one of the top contenders on the circuit.
The timing couldn’t be better. The meet in Beijing was the final tune-up before the World Championships, which begin later this month in Tokyo.
For Mitton, it will mark her fourth appearance at the global event.
She has steadily improved with each showing: from her debut in 2019, to a fourth-place finish in 2022, and then silver at the 2023 championships in Budapest.
Now, she enters Tokyo with her sights set on claiming her first world title.
