Nova Scotia Power has restarted manually checking power meters after halting the practice in light of a recent cybersecurity incident.
While the smart meters have continued to track electricity use, they have been unable to transmit that data to the company’s billing systems. As a result, most customers have been receiving estimated bills based on their historical usage.
Nova Scotia Power has temporarily returned to manual meter reading in an effort to verify the accuracy of estimated bills. A few dozen contractors are now out in the field visiting properties throughout the province.
The company says customers do not need to be home for their meter to be read.
They are also reminding customers that all meter readers will be wearing Nova Scotia Power-branded clothing and carry official ID that identifies them as an employee.
