Nova Scotia has updated how much money non-unionized civil servants get paid when they are laid off without cause, or a significant reason.
The new maximum severance for non-union and non-association civil servants dismissed without cause would be four weeks of pay for every year they have had the job, up to 72 weeks. Employers also must give employees eight weeks’ notice before they are laid off.
The previous period was a maximum of 52 weeks’ payment.
The new rules, which came into effect on Friday, follow the official proclamation of a bill they passed in the legislature in March.
The government says about 24 per cent of provincial employees are not in a union or association.
