The feds say they’re combatting illegal fishing in the Maritimes.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says there’s been speculation about a lack of enforcement in light of ongoing job action by some officers.
They say suggesting there’s no enforcement is false, as fishery officers are patrolling by sea, land and air.
Unauthorized lobster fishing has been a problem in St. Mary’s Bay, Nova Scotia, and it’s led to crime.
In a statement last month, the department confirmed some officers are still refusing to work in certain conditions.
DFO says they respect that right, and they’re investigating all reports of unsafe working environments.
They say they’re making every effort to minimize operational impacts.
The industry and province have called on Ottawa to take action, last week Premier Tim Houston urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to help restore the rule of law, and peace of mind for residents.
DFO says enforcement isn’t always visible, and it may not always look the way people want or expect it to.
They add they’re continuing to make arrests and seize vessels and traps.
