A provincial tribute to remember lost fishers is coming up at the Seamen’s Memorial in Guysborough County.
The Seamen’s Memorial Service will be Sunday, August 11th at 2 p.m. in Canso.
Each year, the names on the memorial are read as wreaths are placed in memory of those tragically lost from the area and other coastal communities in Nova Scotia.
The local Lions club built the memorial in 1976 to mark the 75th anniversary of the incorporation of the Town of Canso.
In 1989, the province proclaimed the second Sunday in August as Seamen’s Memorial Day.
On the third Sunday – August 18th this year – the wreaths will be taken to sea for a final blessing and tribute to lost fishermen and fisherwomen.
