Some changes could be coming for students in the Halifax area who rely on public transit to get to school. The Province of Nova Scotia is pulling its $1.2 million in funding for Halifax student transit passes, which could leave Grade 7 to 12 students paying out of pocket to ride the bus. The funding was part of a pilot program aimed at helping students get to and from school more affordably, but now Halifax Regional Municipality will have to decide whether it can fill that gap in its own budget. And that’s happening at a time when residents are already looking at the possibility of an average property tax increase of just over 10 percent as the city works to manage spending. So it’s another budget decision that could have a ripple effect for families across the region.
