Flights into parts of western Mexico were disrupted Sunday following a military operation that targeted a cartel leader in Jalisco State.
The Mexican government said Special Forces carried out a planned operation in the municipality of Tapalpa aimed at arresting the individual. Authorities confirmed the cartel leader was killed during the raid.
In the hours that followed, airlines reported cancellations and diversions into both Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.
Air Canada said it suspended operations to Puerto Vallarta on Sunday due to what it described as an ongoing security situation. Several U.S.-based carriers also reported diverted or cancelled flights into the region.
Videos circulating on social media showed scenes of confusion inside airport terminals in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara, with some travellers taking cover inside buildings.
The U.S. State Department advised its citizens in parts of Jalisco State — including Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara — to shelter in place. Other states were also included in the advisory.
Canada has issued a high-risk travel advisory for Mexico, advising Canadians to avoid non-essential travel.
Late Sunday morning, tourists in the beach town of Sayulita were warned to return to their hotel rooms and remain indoors as authorities responded to the situation.
Travellers are being advised to check directly with their airline for the latest updates before heading to the airport.
