Here’s a wild little Nova Scotia story for you and it’s about a creature most of us would never notice. A snorkeler near Dartmouth thought she saw a piece of rotten leaf floating around… turns out it was alive. She had stumbled on an incredibly rare sea slug called Elysia chlorotica and scientists across North America are freaking out. This little green slug can actually photosynthesize. It steals chloroplasts from the algae it eats and basically runs on sunlight, which means it can go months without eating. Researchers say figuring out how it does this could lead to breakthroughs in medicine, clean energy, even treatments for inflammatory diseases and cancer. The problem? The species is so elusive that most scientists haven’t been able to find one in years. This new discovery at Rainbow Haven Provincial Park revealed hundreds maybe thousands hiding right here in N.S., all thanks to a curious snorkeler who took a closer look.
