Labour Day falls on Monday, September 1, and as a designated retail closing day in Nova Scotia, most stores and services will be closed or operating on reduced schedules.
Retail and Shopping
Major grocery chains, including Sobeys and Atlantic Superstore, will be closed, as will NSLC outlets. Malls such as Halifax Shopping Centre, Mic Mac Mall, Dartmouth Crossing, Scotia Square, and Sunnyside Mall will also close for the holiday. Smaller convenience stores and some pharmacies may remain open, often with reduced hours.
Municipal Services
Municipal offices and customer service centres across the province will be closed, and 311 contact centres in Halifax will only take urgent calls. Libraries will also be closed.
Halifax Transit buses and ferries will operate on a holiday schedule, with the Alderney ferry running every half hour and no Woodside ferry service. Other municipal transit systems across Nova Scotia will also operate on holiday schedules.
There will be no mail delivery or pickup by Canada Post on Labour Day, and most banks will be closed.
Solid waste collection will not take place on Monday in municipalities that normally collect on that day. In many areas, collection will shift to an alternate date — residents are asked to check with their municipality for details.
Recreation and Parking
Many municipally operated facilities, including recreation centres and pools, will be closed. Outdoor pools and splash pads have ended their season, while beaches remain open but without lifeguards. In Halifax, the Emera Oval will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., weather permitting.
On-street paid parking in Halifax will be free on Monday, though drivers must still follow all other posted rules.
