The Town of Lunenburg has confirmed plans to sell the former train station at 18 Dufferin Street to the Second Story Women’s Centre.
In a statement released Tuesday, the Town said the non-profit requested the sale to secure a permanent home, ensuring its services stay in Lunenburg and offering clients discreet access to the building. The property would be sold below market value, which is allowed under the Municipal Government Act when a clear community benefit is provided.
Second Story Women’s Centre has leased the old station for years and currently serves women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals across Lunenburg County. The Town says selling to a non-profit means no public tender process is required, and it is not considering private developers for the site.
A public hearing on the proposed sale took place on June 24.
The sale would include the building and nearby parking lots, while the adjacent trail corridor would remain public with a right-of-way for access.
The next step in the process would involve council voting on a purchase agreement though that has not yet been scheduled.
