The 26th annual Sandcastle Competition is taking place this Saturday at Rissers Beach, inviting participants of all ages to show off their best beachside creations.
Organized by the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, the event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is free to enter. On-site registration takes place at the end of the main boardwalk near the canteen.
Special Events Manager Madison Lacey says it’s a fun and lighthearted competition that draws a creative mix of entries year after year.
“We had an ice cream stand. A lot of people really like doing sculptures, so we see a lot of alligators, sharks, whales—lots of sea creatures,” said Lacey. “Last year there was a massive scene of a shark and people swimming away, and they titled it ‘Swimming Lessons.’”
The competition is open to everyone, with four categories: ages 12 and under, 13 to 18, adults with no children, and families. Three prizes will be awarded in each category, judged by members of the MODL recreation team.
Lacey says they’re keeping a close eye on the weather, but things are looking good for Saturday.
“It seems like it’s going to be a nice day,” she said.
While the event is free to attend, participants are encouraged to consider donating to Pro Kids, a municipal program that offers financial support to help youth participate in sports and recreation.
