Prime Minister Mark Carney is meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Kananaskis ahead of the official start of the G7 summit in Alberta.
The two leaders are holding a one-on-one meeting to discuss ongoing Canada-U.S. relations, including work toward a possible trade and security agreement. A draft proposal has been shared between Canadian and U.S. officials, though no final deal has been reached.
Canadian trade officials say progress has been made, but discussions are ongoing and outcomes remain uncertain. The talks are part of broader efforts to address tariffs on key Canadian exports and to improve economic cooperation.
Trump arrived in Calgary on Sunday evening before travelling to the summit site. Leaders from the G7 countries are gathering across Kananaskis, Banff, and Calgary for the high-level event.
This year’s summit takes place amid growing global tensions, including a flare-up in the Middle East.
The summit format has been adjusted, with Canada opting not to issue a single joint communiqué. Instead, participating countries will release a series of short statements focused on specific outcomes.
The G7 includes Canada, the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.
