Mahone Bay Town Council has approved the 2025-26 operating and capital budgets, setting the stage for a year of significant investment in infrastructure, housing, and community services.
The operating budget totals $9.22 million, while capital spending is projected at $17.04 million. Nearly 60 per cent of the capital budget will be funded through external sources, including over $10 million in grants and contributions.
To support these plans, residential and commercial tax rates will each increase by 1 per cent, bringing them to $1.121 and $3.081 per $100 of assessment, respectively. The fire protection rate has also been adjusted slightly to $0.219 per $100, completing the shift to fully fund fire services through this rate.
The budget process involved more than 15 hours of Council meetings and public discussions, all of which are available for viewing on the Town’s YouTube channel. Mayor Lohnes-Croft described the process as both rigorous and transparent, emphasizing the importance of clear communication and long-term planning.
Among the highlights of the budget is the Edgewater Street Project, the Town’s largest capital initiative for the year.
This project will revitalize public spaces along the waterfront, expand the Living Shoreline, and introduce a raised multi-use trail for pedestrians and cyclists. It also includes upgrades to municipal services in the area.
Other priorities include improvements to stormwater management in the Ernst Brook watershed, new housing development supported by federal funding, and environmental initiatives such as urban forest planning and canopy restoration. The Town is also increasing support for local organizations that provide cultural and recreational programming.
In addition, Mahone Bay is expanding shared services with neighboring municipalities, including joint efforts in occupational health and safety, procurement, and emergency management.
The full 2025-26 budget will be published soon on the Town’s website.
