The federal government has announced it is creating additional jobs in Canada this summer.
The Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program was initially going to offer funding to create 70,000 jobs, but the decision was made to invest an additional roughly $25 million in the initiative.
“We’ve added 6,000 more summer jobs this year, bringing the total to 76,000 across the country,” explained Minister of Jobs and Families, Patty Hadju. “The Canada Summer Jobs program helps young people get meaningful, paid work experience that builds skills, confidence, and connections.”
“It also gives small businesses and not-for-profit organizations the staff they need to grow and serve their communities through the busy summer months. This is a smart investment in our economy and in the next generation of leaders, because when young people get a strong start, all of Canada benefits.”
CSJ offers a first job opportunity to young Canadians that can help shape their future education, training, and career choices.
“Ultimately, what it is it’s an opportunity for employers to apply to receive a Canada summer job student who wants a summer experience,” said Hadju. “We have not-for-profit organizations that are funded at 100 per cent, or small businesses that receive 50 per cent of the salary of a student. Students apply to the company or the organization.”
The minister made the announcement during a visit to Watay Power in Thunder Bay, Ont, on Friday.
The 2025 CSJ hiring period was already underway prior to the expansion announcement.
Employers from not-for-profit organizations and the public sector, as well as private sector organizations with 50 or fewer full-time employees, were eligible to apply for funding to create new positions.
The program offers wage subsidies to employers to create summer work experience for those aged 15 to 30.
Youths looking to work have until July 21 to find local job opportunities on the Canadian government’s Job Bank website and mobile app, as well as individual companies’ specific hiring portals.
Youth can apply for summer jobs in fields that interest them, such as the recreation sector, the food industry as well as marketing and tourism.
Jobs are also available in a variety of growing fields, including housing construction and environmental protection.
