After a six-month break, Parliament is back in session today with MPs returning to the House of Commons.
The day will begin with the election of a new Speaker, followed by the formal launch of the session on Tuesday with a Speech from the Throne — this time delivered by King Charles III.

Ahead of the return, Prime Minister Mark Carney told Liberal MPs to prepare for a “very, very busy” period. “We are going to be very, very busy in the next few weeks. We are going to be very, very busy in the next few months. We are going to be very, very busy in the next few years. We are going to have to do things previously thought impossible at speeds not seen in generations.”
Carney says his government plans to introduce several key pieces of legislation, “It’s about making life more affordable immediately for Canadians, legislating that middle class tax cut, legislating the cut in the GST.”
The Prime Minister adds that his government will eliminate all federal barriers to free trade in Canada and keep Canadians safe by toughening the criminal code.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said his caucus will keep its focus on affordability, public safety, and national unity.
“We will be demanding a spring budget that reveals the true deficit, lower spending, taxes and inflation,” Poilievre said.
