The Liberal government will deliver its first throne speech under Mark Carney on Tuesday.
Also, a first in 48 years, His Majesty the King will open the 45th Parliament of Canada.
Royal Historian and Representative of the Monarchist League of Canada, Barry MacKenzie, says King Charles III will deliver the throne speech.
” I suspect a lot of people are delighted with the news, the fact that he’s going to read the throne speech. I think it also came as a surprise to many people. This is, in many ways, a significant fulfillment of his role as sovereign because that’s a role normally undertaken by the Governor General as His representative. Given what’s happening in terms of Canadian-American relations right now, I think it comes at a particularly significant moment where we see soft power being exerted in a very significant way. Hopefully, people, particularly south of the border, will take notice of the fact that there’s certainly a strong message, I think, being sent as part of this.”
Queen Camilla will also be by his side during the two-day visit.
“I think you’ll probably see significant crowds in the National Capital. It’s the first time it’s happened since 1977. I expect we’ll see the crowds that we saw here that year. The Queen was here in her silver jubilee. We were in a very different place and a whole variety of different ways. But I do think there’s going to be a lot of attention on Ottawa.”
He adds that seeing King Charles III read the Speech from the Throne is hugely symbolic and an important part of our tradition.
