A Moncton man allegedly stole a police car in a chase that went from Sackville to Amherst.
On May 16, New Brunswick RCMP responded to a call about a man that was not wanted at a hotel in Sackville. During the call, police say the man managed to steal a police car.
They do not say at what time the car was initially stolen, but at about 2:32 p.m., the New Brunswick officers told the Colchester and Cumberland RCMP and the Amherst Police Department that the car was entering Nova Scotia, according to a news release.
The operations centre was tracking the car through its GPS system in N.B., and once it entered N.S. operations centre took over monitoring.
Amherst police tried to stop the car on Highway 2 in Upper Nappan, but the driver sped off toward Amherst Point on the Southampton Road. Amherst police and RCMP officers kept chasing after it, and a few minutes later, they put a spike belt over Southampton Road and damaged the rogue police car.
The suspect continued onto Highway 104, heading west, and officers continued following.
At about 2:49 p.m., police forced the car off the highway near the Fort Lawrence overpass and arrested 37-year-old man from Moncton.
The RCMP says no one was injured during the arrest, and Highway 104 was closed for about six hours as part of the police operation.
Police say they were ready to send an alert through the Alert Ready system, but “the suspect, however, was then apprehended quickly and safely.”
The man faces more than 20 charges in Nova Scotia, including:
- including possession of firearms
- theft of a motor vehicle
- possession of property obtained by crime
- impaired operation
- dangerous operation
- mischief
He also faces charges in New Brunswick.
He appeared in court on Wednesday and is being held in custody. He appears next on June 16 in Amherst Provincial Court.
