Canada’s famed groundhog forecasters have delivered their verdicts, offering mixed results for winter-weary Canadians.
In Nova Scotia where the first groundhog forecasts in North America are made both Shubenacadie Sam and Lucy the Lobster saw their shadows, predicting six more weeks of winter.
Sam’s early morning forecast at 8 a.m. AST confirmed what many Maritimers were already bracing for: more cold and snow ahead. Lucy, Barrington Passage’s crustacean prognosticator, followed suit, reinforcing the expectation of an extended winter season.
Meanwhile, in Ontario, Wiarton Willie offered a different outlook. Emerging to cloudy skies, Willie did not see his shadow, signaling an early spring.
The announcement was made in front of a large crowd despite frigid conditions, with wind chills making it feel like -18°C.
With conflicting forecasts between the provinces, Canadians will have to wait and see which prediction holds true as winter continues.
