I happened to notice, today is Adopt a Shelter Pet Day. It’s a day I can certainly get behind. Since I happen to have one.
The picture here is Sophie. She’s a little whiter around the muzzle these days. Maybe not as spry as she once was, but she’s still a good friend and a great dog.
We have had other dogs before. The last one kind of avoided the shelter process. My sister-in-law found her in a box on the sidewalk in front of her house. It totally baffles me why someone would just dump a puppy on the sidewalk like that, but at least she ended up in the right place.
After she wandered across the rainbow bridge, as they say, we just kept an eye on the S.H.A.I.D. website, hoping for something interesting to pop up. My wife even dropped by a couple times, and it was on one of those times that she met a couple puppies and their mother who had just arrived at the shelter.
So we waited until they appeared on the website, then put our name forward and ended up with a puppy. She was a little puppy. We had to wait for a few days for her to be ready, and when I went to pick her up, she was a bigger puppy. And you could tell, she still had some growing to do to fit into her feet.
It wasn’t really in the plan to adopt a hundred pound dog. But I’m glad we did. Although she wasn’t that size when we got her. But she turned out to be a well tempered, very nice dog. One of the nicest I’ve had the pleasure to meet. And she continues to be, to this day.
There’s a lot to be said for adopting a shelter pet, whether it’s a cat or a dog or any other type of animal you may come across. It makes you feel good for helping the animal, and they make you feel good just by being your friend. It’s a win-win all around.
So maybe think about adopting a shelter pet. Or if you’re not in the market for a pet right now, think about helping out a local shelter, like S.H.A.I.D. Today is the last day for their kitten shower, but you can still donate to that today. And don’t forget the yard sale. It’s coming back this year, and I hope to see you there.
