I’ve been searching for a picture, but I forgot to take one this past weekend. I couldn’t find one from past years. And a search of available images I could use turned up nothing. But there were plenty of mayflowers around over the weekend.
We have access to various stock photos to use on here. Except if you search for “mayflower”, you get a ton of pictures of some old boat. And hundreds of pictures of various flowers. But none of those flowers had any resemblance to our provincial flower. I even tried trailing arbutus, which is the official name. I ended up with a lot of pictures of trees. No flowers. Well, there was one flower, but it was just not the one I was looking for.
I was pretty sure I had a picture of a mayflower, but it’s floating around somewhere in the midst of the other several hundred pictures I have on here that I have never gotten around to organizing and naming. But the mayflowers are out. I just have no pictures to show you.
That’s really what I wanted to say. I was doing a bit of raking over the weekend. Not a lot. Just a few select places. Trying to get things cleaned up a bit without bothering too many little critters who might be hiding there. Any little critters were hopefully just relocated. But under some of the leaves, were several little pinkish white blossoms. Mayflowers.
I then took a short stroll around, and there were others poking up. I had an idea where they might be, because last year I was having trouble locating mayflowers. They were there, just not where I was looking. They seemed to have relocated from some of their previous areas. No small feat for a plant to get up and walk, but they seemed to find a way to move around.
So I stopped for a minute and took the time to smell the mayflowers. For their size, they are quite aromatic. Which is also a reason many people might pick a few at this time of year. A bouquet of mayflowers can add a rather pleasant fragrance to a room.
I let them continue as they were in the hope they might decide to spread further. Those April showers have certainly been doing their job. While the saying is that April showers bring May flowers, I do also realize it is meant to refer to flowers in general that may bloom in May. Not specifically the trailing arbutus. But I like to think all that time we spent under gray skies over the past few weeks has paid off in little pinkish white flowers.
They may be a bit early, but it is nice to see them.
