I waited for them. I won’t say patiently, because I haven’t been patient. There are evenings I open the door, stick my head out and wonder where they are. They should be here by now.
On Friday, I heard them. Not a lot. No where near the thousands that will likely be heard later in the month, but the spring peepers had started.
It started with just a few. A scattering of tentative calls. Sort of, “Hey! You up yet?” Followed by a brief, far off reply. No where near the full on frenzy that will be coming. I hope.
I like hearing the peepers. It is a sure sign of spring. Although it isn’t unusual to have a few start and then maybe go quiet for a couple days as things get a little more chilly at night.
The forecast for the next few days will likely not make them happy. The few that have appeared are likely to get pretty quiet if we get the predicted snow. If there are any peepers to be heard, I suspect they may be making rude comments about the weather. I know I will be.
But at least they have started. They might be in for a nasty surprise over the next couple days, but they won’t go far. Soon, they’ll be screaming through the night.
Now, bring of the salamanders and wood frogs.
