I’ll be honest, I’m usually not one of those people chomping at the bit, wanting to get on the water on the very first day of trout season. Not that I don’t want to go. But it’s usually pretty chilly this time of year and often the weather isn’t the best, so I’m content to wait. For a few days anyway. But we don’t always get an April 1 like this.
It’s a beautiful day for the first of April this year. It may not remain that way as we get closer to the weekend, which has me wondering why I didn’t take a couple days off this week, but you really can’t predict weather that accurately. At least not the “three weeks from Monday will be a great day” type of accuracy.
I know there are those who will be getting out today. I’ll admit, I’m a little jealous. I know several making plans. Making sure they had bait. Trying to find minnows and worms to see if they can attract a trout. And I wish them all the luck. It could be an interesting start to the season.
Water levels in most places are pretty high. The fish are likely browsing bushes and trees, looking for some tasty snacks in places they don’t usually get to, which will make things a bit different. And with the high water, I do hope that everyone stays safe.
I’m doing my best to develop a calm attitude as fishing season starts this year. I’m trying to tell myself that there’s no rush. I will get there. I don’t have to rush right out on the first day.
But on a day like this, it’s hard not to want to be outdoors. Enjoying the day and trying to get the attention of a trout or two.
I’ll get there. Maybe just not today.
