Today is Gum Drop Day. No one seems to know why. It just is.
It really doesn’t make a lot of sense. Most gum drops are eaten around Christmas, which I suppose is true for a lot of candies. But in the early 2000s, someone decided mid February would be a good day for gum drops.
Gum drops were invented in the early 1900s by Percy Truesdell, who supposedly got tired of hard flavourless globs of sugar being passed off as candy and decided to create something more flavourful. Being a chemist, he decided to fix that, and eventually developed the gumdrop.
If you’re wondering, gum drops are drop shaped and often coated with sugar. Gummies are different, and supposedly a slightly different consistency. Although they are pretty close.
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting gum drop day. Not that I have anything against gum drops, but it’s the day after Valentine’s Day. Candy has been kind of a go-to as a Valentine’s gift for many years. Usually Chocolates of some kind. But what happens to the leftover chocolate?
I was really looking for leftover chocolate day. There is no day for leftover chocolate. Maybe it’s all just repackaged for Easter. Or maybe there is no leftover chocolate day because there is never any left over. Although I find that hard to believe.
You usually see sales on candy after Halloween. You would think we might see more of it after Valentine’s.
Tomorrow is almond day. Maybe we can wrap a bit of chocolate around them?
