It’s been all over the news. Loblaw announced the end of the 50% off sticker.
It seemed like a good idea that worked for everyone. Items that were getting close to their “best before” dates would be discounted. It would ensure a quick sale for the store and give the consumer a bit of a break on their budget. The store might not get full price, but something is better than nothing.
But Loblaw’s announced they are doing away with the 50% off sticker. Today is some parts of the country, next week for around here. There will still be discounts on items they want to clear quickly, but those discounts will only be 30% from now on.
I will admit I’ve picked up a few of those discounted items. Those bright red stickers would jump out at you, and I’m not against saving money. Although I never shopped specifically for them. I know people who do though, or at least used to. They would hit stores close to closing, particularly going into a holiday when the store will be closed for an extra day or so and they are trying to move things out. Some of those people had come to depend on those discounts to help their food budget go a bit further.
As one of those people who only casually looked for the 50% off sticker, I might not be as inclined to go for a smaller discount. It depends on the item. But I know there are those who will be effected by the change, and not for the better.
Although I like those bright red stickers. But from now on, they might be a little less attractive.
