I guess maybe it’s time to think about getting off oil. At least for home heating. But it’s one of those things that can get pretty confusing.
Unlike a lot of politicians, I was not unhappy with the roll back of the carbon tax on heating oil. Although, strangely, I have no real problem with the carbon tax. I know. I’m a bit weird when it comes to that. I’m not going to get into a big discussion about it, but we do get the money back. Or at least a good chunk of it. And it does make me feel like we’re doing something about climate change. And the thought of my grandchildren having a livable planet is also a big factor. So I really don’t have a big issue with it. But I’m also happy we have a little more time to deal with it.
So I have been thinking about heat pumps. Not all the time. But since the weather has gotten a bit chillier, it has been on my mind. That while I have the chance, and there are bunches of incentives available, that maybe I should be taking advantage of the situation. Then I tend to forget about it. But I know I should be doing something.
I have my doubts about the technology for one thing. Last year, when our temperature dipped to twenty below, even the oil furnace struggled to keep up with keeping the house warm. Thankfully, we also have a wood fireplace. Building a nice wood fire certainly helped the situation. But it’s not something I want to do on a regular basis.
Not that I don’t like wood. I love wood heat. There’s just something about it that makes you feel cozy, more so than other forms of heating. Or maybe it’s just seeing the flames that does it. But wood would probably top my list of heat sources. But I am also not getting any younger, so the thought of moving around large quantities of wood is not quite as appealing as it once was. Not that I can’t use the exercise.
There are a lot of ups and downs to trying to stay warm in our climate. It’s not always easy to pick the right up.
