The start of the year seems to bring a whole lot of “dry” these days. Not that you might not think you need a good detox after the holidays.
But you hear about “Dry January”, which basically encourages people to avoid alcohol for the month. Then there’s “Dry February”. Same thing, only that one is also a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. There is a connection between alcohol and cancer, and not just because when you’re having a few you also want to smoke a few darts. That just makes it worse. But alcohol can lead to some cancers. I also heard about one the other day they call “Digital Dry January”, which encourages people to spend a bit less time with their devices. Maybe even clean them up a bit, so you’re not saving so much stuff you don’t really need.
But it all adds up to a whole lot of “dry” going on.
I don’t really have a problem with any of it. If you want to take a month to not drink, that’s great. I may participate myself, just not really on purpose. I just don’t tend to drink a very much these days anyway, which has more to do with diabetes than anything else. That and laying off the beer was the way I dropped a several pounds a few years ago. But that was more so I was able to tie my shoes without falling over gasping for breath. And I would like that to continue, so I tend to keep my consumption down.
But it is a bit unfortunate that some of these things don’t get a bit more coordinated. The idea of a fundraiser for the Cancer Society I like. But coming on the heals of another “dry” month just seems to confuse the issue. At least in my mind.
But if you’re trying any sort of “dry” this time of year, all the best to you.
