I’ve never really figured out where the whole “white Christmas” thing came from. Maybe it was from the movies and music of the past. But it doesn’t seem to happen that often. And it’s not looking great for this year.
Extended forecasts really aren’t much good in this area. The weather is likely to change from one hour to the next. Sometimes from one minute to the next. And predicting it? Not a great chance of that. Sometimes they come close, as long as you’re not talking to far ahead.
But at this point, it’s not looking good for a white Christmas.
And I know it will change. It always does that far ahead. But there just isn’t much snow in the forecast for the next little while.
There are possibilities. The chances of a white Christmas in Halifax area are about thirty-two percent. And we tend to be a little less snowy than the city. In fact, since the mind-80s, our chances of seeing snow on Christmas day have dropped quite a bit.
Which is fine. I can remember as a kid not being overly happy shoveling the driveway, dressed in all my brand new hockey gear I had found under the tree because I couldn’t wait to try it on. Didn’t really help with the shoveling, but I was ready for a breakaway if the chance came up. Or a trip to my grandmother’s house. Whatever.
Since those days, I’ve been happier with not so snowy Christmases, because it makes travel easier. Funny how things change when you’re the one doing the driving.
So if you have family to visit over the holidays, it’s not looking too bad. If you’re hoping for a nice fresh blanket of white over everything… it might be a while.
