I feel kind of bad. But maybe I’m to blame. In a way. Me and probably many others like me.
I was a bit shocked to hear yesterday that Reader’s Digest Canada will cease operations. I don’t know all the details, but the thought of the world without Reader’s Digest makes me a bit sad. Although I’m as much to blame as anyone, I guess.
There was a time when I subscribed to Reader’s Digest. And a few other magazines. I not only subscribed, I also tended to collect them, which was part of the reason I finally gave up. That and National Geographic. You start to run out of closet space after a while. And you can always catch up at your next doctor’s appointment.
That’s the part that where it is really likely to hit home. Although a lot of doctor’s offices cleaned out all their magazines when Covid hit. So you can only catch up on so many back issues.
Even though I haven’t subscribed for a decade or two, I’ll still miss it. There were always a lot great stories in there. And the jokes were always a highlight.
And it goes beyond just the magazine. I still have large numbers of the Reader’s Digest condensed books. Every couple of months they would put out a book containing four other books in an abridged version. I can’t tell you how many of those I’ve read.
I may have stopped subscribing. And even stopped reading on a regular basis. But once it’s gone, I’ll miss it.
I guess maybe more of us should have renewed those subscriptions.
