We’re getting pretty deep into the “whattheheckamIgoingtobuyforChristmas” season. I write it all as one word, mostly because that’s how it’s playing in my head. And mostly because I have no answer. So it has become all one big word, on a billboard with flashing lights in my head. Which is still not helpful.
There are some of my usual go-to’s. Like things for the kitchen, some of which make great stocking stuffers or small gifts. And since my children have now grown and have kitchens of their own, I know some of the neat little things I might like would be things they might like as well.
You have the bigger items. Like maybe an air fryer. I have thought about those for a while. So far I have avoided the temptation. Although the temptation I believe I am really avoiding is “healthy” food that tastes deep fried. But it’s more the lack of counter space to keep some of these things.
I managed to avoid the Instant Pot craze. Although I did buy those for my children. I have seen them cluttering their counter tops, their use having dwindled over time. So I don’t feel bad about having one of those.
Then you have all the nifty little smaller items. And there are many out there.
I noticed someone plugging a new can opener. I have can openers. I know I have can openers because the constantly conspire to keep my out of the cutlery drawer. No matter how carefully I place them, they somehow rise up and jam the drawer so it cannot be opened without somehow managing to get you hand inside an unopened drawer and move the can opener out of the way. So I sure don’t need more of those.
I’ve also seen a corn peeler that looked interesting. Although I can’t remember actually ever wanting to peel the kernels off an ear of corn. They have conveniently been making it that way for years.
There seem to be several new versions of the vegetable chopper. I think I got one of those years ago. If I dig around enough, I may be able to find it. Probably in the cupboard with the mandolin. They call it a mandolin, but you can’t play a tune on it. It’s a slicer, which I don’t think I ever used out of fear the tips of my fingers would end up in what I was cooking.
There seem to be many new knives available, but I have knives. What I need is to get off my butt and sharpen them.
I new meat thermometer might be a good idea. I think I put the last one in the sink after I used it and managed to accidentally drown it. That might be an idea. Although I don’t need a smart one. I do not want to be getting texts from my steak as I cook it. It just seems weird to me.
But there are lots of little things out there that might make interesting gifts for this year. The toughest part is figuring out where to store them after Christmas.
