There should be an award for the best road sign. I think the people of Broad Cove might have a winner.
I was cruising through Facebook this morning and noticed a picture of the sign. Since it wasn’t my picture, I don’t feel right sharing it with you. But if anyone has a picture of it, feel free.
It would seem, judging from the sign, that the community of Broad Cove must have had a bit of road work done recently. After having driven for quite some time on bumpy roads full of holes, it would be quite natural for people to maybe speed up a bit. After all, just the joy of having a nice, new, smooth surface can do that. It has happened to me in other areas. The surface is just such a pleasure to drive on that you tend to speed up without knowing, and you have to make an effort to keep from going a bit too fast.
While it might be quite natural to enjoy the new road surface, we also have a lot of people around the area who like to walk. This is something you might notice in several areas. I’ve seen a lot of those signs that mention children in the area, or that it is a “walking community” and people should slow down a bit. All good reminders, and hopefully they do work. But this sign in particular really should have some sort of award.
The sign in question is yellow. That same school bus yellow you may see on many signs along the highways around the province. But the message, while very serious, gets the message home in a very humorous way.
The sign simply says, “Please Slow Down …or we’ll put the potholes back.”
If there was an award for road sign of the year, that sign would be my nominee.
