I’m not even going to pretend to understand it all. It gets pretty confusing and there seems to be a lot to it that we might not see on the surface. But we have been hearing a lot about artificial intelligence lately.
I can see the point of Hollywood actors and writers, not wanting computers to take over the jobs and in some cases to keep doing things they have chosen not to do themselves in person. They should have some control over their own image.
I can understand educators being a bit wary of artificial intelligence doing work for students. The students are not really doing the work, so, while they are learning how to use a chatbot, they might not be learning things they need to know later in their chosen field.
But I am not sure how I feel about the Sports Illustrated story. The magazine was apparently running stories that had been written by artificial intelligence, carefully disguised as people. They even had pictures to go with their names, just like they were real. Only they weren’t real. The pictures were stock photos, which is what tipped others off that Sports Illustrated was using AI.
Other than the fact that I don’t like seeing actual people being replaced by machines, it is bound to happen. Although they say that at the moment, artificial intelligence is actually creating more jobs than is being lost to the machines. I don’t have anything against machines getting a job. I’d just rather not see them replacing people.
But there seem to be a lot of things heading that way. It might not be too long before many of us can be replaced by machines. But there are still a lot jobs that will need actual humans.
Hopefully the machine that takes my job will still need someone to look after it. Maybe give it a little squirt of WD40 now and then.
