For the past few days, I’ve been trying to ignore my lawn. It’s trying to get my attention, letting me know it’s getting a bit shaggy and could maybe use to be mowed on last time. But does it really?
The fact is, it may. Even though we have started getting a bit of frost and temperatures are starting to cool off, my lawn seems to be continuing to grow. I’ve tried letting the leaves pile up on it, hoping it will just go to sleep for the winter, but it doesn’t seem interested in that.
I could give it one last trim, I suppose. Maybe mulch a few of those leaves. Or possibly use the bag and just suck all the leaves up at the same time. Although that tends to make for a long mowing session, since you have to empty the bag about every ten minutes.
There is plenty of advice online. It tells you to stop mowing when the grass stops growing. But the grass doesn’t talk much, and it seems to be sneaking in a bit of growth when I’m not looking.
Some websites say it depends on soil temperature. I don’t have a device handy to measure that, so I’ll just have to guess. And if I’m guessing, I’d probably say it has stopped. That way I can just put the mower away and ignore it until next spring.
Part of the issue is that we no longer have evenings available to us, since it gets dark so early. I can wait until the weekend, but there is lots to be done and so little time to do it.
Maybe it will rain. Or at least be wet enough to help make up my mind.
Should I mow one last time? Probably. Will I? Tough question. But I’m leaning toward no.
