It’s always a subject for discussion around my place. What are the best Halloween treats?
A lot depends on your personal preference. Some people are sweet people. They like sugar or pretty much anything sweet. Others, like myself, were born with more a salt tooth than a sweet tooth. So you tend to have those who are all about the candy, and others who are all about the chips.
I actually am old enough to remember when the little bags of chips started to show up around here. That would have been around the early to mid 60s, and for me, that was a happy day. It was the start of the decline of things like apples being given out at Halloween. Molasses kisses also started to fade out. It was in many ways a turn to a more commercial side of Halloween, replacing the more traditional treats with things like small bags of chips and mini chocolate bars.
As a salt freak, it made me happy. More salty snacks? Yes, please. Fewer apples that would bounce around in the bottom of my pillowcase as I made my way around the streets, until they finally turned into one gigantic soft bruise was not something I could see a downside to. Sure, maybe they weren’t as healthy, but most normal eight year olds are not thinking healthy when it comes to Halloween.
I will admit, over time I have come to appreciate the molasses kiss. It really isn’t as bad as I thought many years ago. Of course I developed my appreciation for them because they were the thing I could get away with stealing from my children. They weren’t really fans, so I could eat as many of those as I wanted.
And although I am still a salt freak, the combination of a salty snack and milk chocolate is extremely hard to beat.
So if it’s a choice between sweet and salt, I would usually go for salt. Not to say I would turn down a combination of the two.
